Why You Need to Clarify Your Coily Hair

Why You Need to Clarify Your Coily Hair
Table of Contents

Building a healthy hair regimen is crucial for achieving luscious, thriving strands. Ensure it includes regular washing and conditioning, deep conditioning treatments, and protective styling products – plus, don't skip those much-needed pamper sessions! However, after a few weeks, product buildup can accumulate on your strands, making your hair unresponsive to your usual treatments. When that happens, there's only one solution: clarifying your hair!

Why is it important to clarify your hair?

Clarifying kinky, coily, curly, or straight hair is important because it helps remove accumulated dirt, product residue, environmental pollutants, and other impurities. These buildups can lead to dull, lifeless hair, as well as scalp irritation.

Clarifying products help refresh and restore hair so it looks healthy and vibrant again. Clarifiers also help open hair cuticles and prepare them to receive deep conditioning treatments. This helps hair better absorb essential nutrients.

When to clarify kinky hair?

Kinky hair should be clarified once every three months. Clarifying shampoo is an excellent way to rid kinky hair of dirt, debris, and product buildup that can make it look dull and lifeless. The best time to do this is when you notice your hair starting to feel soft or heavy due to dirt and product accumulation.

How to clarify kinky hair?

Clarifiers come in many different forms, from shampoos to masks and even DIY recipes (but personally, I'm not a big fan of DIY products; allow me to doubt their effectiveness). You can choose the best option for your hair type and condition.

When clarifying, be careful not to over-shampoo, as this can lead to dryness and damage to your kinky hair.

Instead, lather your hair with a gentle shampoo, a moisturizing shampoo, a purifying shampoo—in short, a shampoo that does not contain conditioning ingredients such as silicones or mineral oils. Focus on the scalp and massage it, as this will help remove buildup and dirt.

Follow with a deep conditioning treatment to ensure hair is well-conditioned. Leave the mask on for at least five minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Finally, finish with a cool water rinse to close the hair cuticles. This will help keep your hair shiny and healthy.

How to naturally clarify kinky hair?

If you prefer to go the natural route, a few options are available. Apple cider vinegar is one of the most popular methods for clarifying hair. Simply mix a quarter cup of vinegar with warm water and pour it over your scalp and hair. Leave it on for 10 minutes before proceeding with your usual shampoo.

Baking soda is also effective for removing product buildup and adding shine to your hair. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with warm water, massage it into your scalp for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Finally, lemon juice is ideal for naturally clarifying hair. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a cup of warm water, pour it over your scalp, and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then proceed with your usual shampoo and conditioner.

Is baking soda dangerous for kinky hair?

Baking soda is generally a safe and effective way to clarify kinky hair. However, it can dry out the scalp if used too often and in large quantities, so it's important to use it sparingly. Additionally, baking soda should never be used on color-treated or relaxed hair, as it may strip the color or damage the scalp. If you plan to use baking soda to clarify your kinky hair, be sure to follow up with a deep conditioning treatment. This will help condition them optimally and keep your hair healthy and strong.

With the right products and techniques, you can keep your kinky hair looking its best.
